How Is She Feeling? (2º ESO)
Vocabulary focus: Emotions
Grammar: 1st Conditional.
Level: 2º ESO.
In this activity we will make our first contact with the world of emotions in English. We will start by refreshing and expand vocabulary related to basic emotions. Then we will move on and teach how to use the 1st conditional.
A. Warm-up activity. Start by screening this short video whose stars are the characters from the film Inside Out. This is highly recommended as a warm-up activity. Based on the behavior of the different characters, the class must guess what emotions the little girl is feeling. The answers are very easy and they probably already know the movie, so you can take this opportunity to ask the students what other words they know related to emotions. For instance:
happy: merry, cheerful, delighted...
scared: afraid, frightened, terrified... and so on.
B. Grammar presentation. Teach how the 1st conditional is formed. We use it in order to express a hypothetical situation and its consequence:
If I see a spider, I will be scared
C. Production. Ask students to write five sentences using the first conditional: what things or situations will make them feel happy, sad, scared, disgusted or angry? Tell them to check their sentences in pairs or in groups of four. They may get to know new things from each other!
